Case Study: 18th Century Dutch Marquetry Chest

This chest came to Surrey Antiques after the top was burnt by a fallen candle seriously damaging the marquetry inlay.

The top was carefully cleaned and detailed patterns taken of all the damaged timbers including extensive photographic records. All burnt timbers were removed and carefully selected veneers were matched from our large holdings of period and modern timber. The patterns were applied and the veneers hand cut using traditional techniques to re-form the central urn detail and surrounding flowers. Once glued in place they were stained and polished to match the original top and to give an almost invisible repair.

This was a very rewarding and satisfying restoration project that came to us from another restoration workshop that were unable to undertake a repair of this complicated nature, and provided Surrey Antiques with another very satisfied customer.
