Provenance, acquired directly from Royal Holloway University of London, commissioned by Thomas Holloway and opened by Queen Victoria in 1886. Forming part of the last original Founders furniture ever likely to be decommissioned from this fantastic building.

Attractive Sheraton designed drawing room chair in original distressed gilt finish.

The inspiration for this chair can clearly be seen in Thomas Sheraton’s THE CABINET-MAKER AND UPHOLSTERER’S DRAWING-BOOK.

Details of the front leg can be seen in plate 34, the top rail can be seen in plate 6 and the front leg and arm details can clearly be seen in plate 10.

The underside of the chair carries an old label for SIMKIN’S DEPOSITORY, COLCHESTER and name handwritten in ink, possibly: “Ms Maffett”.  There is also a fragmentary label to the frame printed Dublin and 6060.

A finial from a stair’s half or wall-newel post, circa 1600 – 1620, in the manner of John Bucke (FL. 1611).  Carved in the half-round in the form of a greyhound sejant erect collared and chained, the chain of rectangular links, a scroll-ended cartouche between his paws, seated on his haunches on a domed hemisphere, and the capital of a rectangular-section newel post.

This rare finial is of a type still visible on the Grand Staircase at Hatfield House, built by the Cecils in 1611.

Designed by Edward Barnsley for the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II at Westminster Abbey. With faded velvet upholstered saddle seat and gold braid trim, supported on square section chamfered legs with tapered feet.

Branded to the seat rail ER CORONATION and impressed GLENISTER MAKER WYCOMBE 53.

After the coronation the invited guests were given the opportunity to purchase their seat, we can now only speculate who the original owner of this                stool may have been!

On September 9th 2015, Queen Elizabeth II will surpass Queen Victoria as the longest-reigning British Monarch ever and the longest-reigning female Monarch in world history.

Surrey Antiques now offer a rare opportunity to own a piece of furniture from this increasingly important and historic occasion.
